For those of you that think downtown Los Angeles is a ghost town, you need to unlearn that thought. As a part of a project that we are involved with we’ve had to spend some time downtown and there is definitely something happening.
My first recollection of heading to downtown was a series of high-rise parties in the late eighties. Someone was able to secure a whole floor and the parties were jumpin’, at least it felt that way as a teenager. Fast forward a few years and we weren’t going downtown anymore. Maybe because of the riots, or possibly the party moved to some new enclave, but my opinion became that downtown was somewhere you went during the day for wholesale jewelry and to meet with fashion folk.
But with the new live/work lofts and a series of restaurant and store openings, there has definitely been a shift. I think MOCA, our destination for the night, will benefit from this new development.
We got a chance to check out MOCA’s last installation of their Ojo event, a series of engagement parties “in the form of dynamic social events and performances by LA-based artist collective.” The last was an interesting Interactive Lecture Series, and their theater was packed for each of the sessions.
Definitely keep an eye on the MOCA as it has come out of some highly publicized financial problems and will reopen the Geffen Contemporary again in November. To check out the MOCA visit:
