This past Saturday we had every intention of seeing Cut Chemist at “Saturdays Off the 405” in the Getty Center. We took off to the free event, which is from 6-9pm, at about 7 thinking we’d have plenty of time to catch an hour and head to grab a bite afterward. But as we started getting close to the venue, I knew we miscalculated. Let me say this, it’s never a good sign when you see a healthy women who clearly enjoys her snacks in an undersized hot pink poly-cotton (heavy on the polyester) blend dress, huffing her way down Sepulveda in 4-inch Stilettos going toward the same event you are going – but about a mile out, with full posse in tow.

We pulled into the parking lot, seeing that the two other parking lots across the street had “Full” signs displayed, thinking that we would be turned away for sure…but we weren’t. “There are plenty of spaces in the structure,” said the parking attendant. “Shit, the parking lot goes 7 stories underground, you are sure to find parking.” So we continued in and within minutes were at a stand still at about 2 stories down. Feeling a bit like how someone must have felt attending Woodstock…we were at the point of no return. We eventually found parking on the 6th underground floor, after snaking a spot from a caravan in a RAV4 (you snooze you lose guys), and jumped on the elevator – making it into the line about 10 people back from the lady with the poly-cotton blend that we saw about 45 minutes earlier.

After calculating that the tram came about every 15 minutes or so, and seeing that every floor of the approximately 1500 space parking garage was full, we started having second thoughts. “There are probably about 5,000 people up there,” said the line attendant. WTF?! 5,000 people, all waiting to leave on the same tram, and with about 4000 of them parked above me in the first 5 floors. “I loves meez some Cut Chemist, but I ain’t about to get stuck in a parking lot for 2 hours on an empty stomach,” I thought. That’s when I turned to my wife, caught her in a very familiar deep stare, and without saying a word, we both jumped out of line. That’s the benefit of knowing someone for 17 years…no time needs to be wasted discussing the obvious.

I will say this; I would definitely go to the Getty Center again for this event. Its been happening for some time, but has been switched recently from Fridays to Saturdays. Next time I’d get there closer to 5:30 so that I could get in and out quick. And I’m sure that even if I left the event at 7pm, I’d still catch a hot pink poly-cotton blend or two.
